7/30/20 Update for K-5 Families: Resources on Options for School Year, including Connected Classrooms Details, FAQs and More

Dear San Rafael City Schools K-5 Families,        
                
Over these last few months, we have been preparing for what the reopening of our schools will look like and how we can create safe learning environments. Our communication yesterday contained information about our reentry plans, including the presentation with our recommendations from our Board of Education meeting on Monday. We encourage you to review the presentation if you haven’t already.

We want to follow up specifically with you, families with children in grades K-5. As the recommendations describe, there are two options for K-5 students; we want to highlight these for you and provide some additional resources: 

  • SRCS K-5 Connected Classrooms: We are excited to launch Connected Classrooms, SRCS's remote learning program for grades K-5 with SRCS teachers for the full 2020-21 school year.
  • SRCS Phased-In Approach: Begin with remote learning, and as safety permits, implement the hybrid model (recommendation is for morning / afternoon cohorts) for some in-person learning; the goal of returning to full in-person learning as safety permits.

We understand there are a lot of questions about the two options. Here is a link to our Frequently Asked Questions, which we will update on an ongoing basis. 

Also, please join us for a Virtual Town Hall, today, July 30, from 5 - 6:15 pm on the SRCS Facebook Page! You’ll be able to learn more about the options, ask questions and share your feedback. To help with this, we have two ThoughtExchanges so we can be ready to answer questions, and so we can continue to update our FAQs for those who cannot make it today. To opt-into the Connected Classrooms program, please complete the commitment form. It indicates you are fully committing to participating in SRCS' remote learning program for the entire school year; that your child will not return to in-person learning at all during the 2020-21 school year. If a form is not completed for a student, they will automatically be participating in our phased-in approach. The deadline to complete this form to enroll in Connected Classrooms is Sunday, August 9, 2020.

Also, we want to thank you for taking our surveys. Your responses helped guide this work and provided context for us to follow. We understand that each family’s situation is different and providing a learning environment that meets the needs of all echoes our aspiration of embracing, educating and empowering our community.

In these uncertain times, I believe one of our goals is to create a new normal for our students. A new routine they can count on, which consists of academic learning and social-emotional growth that will allow them to advance as scholars and well-rounded individuals, all while surrounded - remotely or in person - by familiar and supportive teachers and peers.
